Graphic Design
Magazine Layout
In 2022, the Washington Heights Neighborhood Association introduced a new logo. I volunteered to redesign the neighborhood magazine, the Washington Heights Highlighter, printed twice a year and distributed to all the homes in our neighborhood. Its design at the time of rebranding had been functional, but needed more character.
Design Process
For the Spring/Summer 2022 issue of the Washington Heights Highlighter, I refreshed the magazine’s visual language to prioritize community energy. Moving away from traditional ambient photography for the cover, I opted for a candid, human-centric, photo to foster a sense of neighborhood connection. I expanded the “highlighter” theme through a vibrant neon palette using colors from the logo.
I played with different framing elements to add dimension to photos. To break up dense editorial content and improve readability of event calendars and feature stories, I created custom vector images.
